Annapolis, MD - Sept. 29, 2025 - As lawmakers continue to debate the budget and a possible government shutdown looms, officials warn it could have significant impacts to Maryland.
A memo from the White House Budget Office has instructed agencies to identify programs whose funds will lapse if Congress fails to meet the September 30 funding deadline and that have no alternative source of funding. Those programs could then be targeted for sweeping reductions, and the possibility of some of those jobs, which are “not consistent” with President Donald Trump’s priorities, permanently eliminated.
"What it does is it turns people into political pawns," said Rep. Johnny Olszewski.
"Firing them would make a shutdown permanent," he added. "So even if we opened up, there'd be no one there to provide the services. So it would be bad, just not only for those families, but also for the entire American people. That's why I dropped legislation last Friday that would protect those employees."... Read More: FOX45
