Baltimore, MD - Dec. 3, 2025 - Concerns over voter eligibility in Maryland is prompting a measure which would require proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration.
Del. Ryan Nawrocki believes the current system is simply an honor system.
"Right now the way it works is you go in and say "yep that's me and I'm a citizen" and that's it," he said.
This issue gained attention following the arrest of Iowa school superintendent Ian Roberts, an illegal immigrant who was a registered voter in Maryland for years.
Del. Matt Morgan criticized the state's voter roll maintenance, saying, "The State Board of Elections never cleans its voter rolls, so there could be thousands of people on here we have no idea."
The Maryland Freedom Caucus is advocating for stricter identification requirements at the polls to ensure only U.S. citizens vote. Nawrocki emphasized the need for "ironclad documentary proof" of citizenship.
An audit two years ago revealed 2,400 potentially deceased voters and more than 300 duplicate registrations on the rolls. Lawmakers fear similar numbers of non-citizens may be registered.
Morgan noted the recent influx of illegal immigrants, stating, "To think they sit at home on election day is naive."
The proposed measures aim to ensure the integrity and accuracy of Maryland's voting system.
