Baltimore, MD – July 16, 2025 – New bike lane safety poles have been installed on Greenspring Avenue near Willow Glen, in front of the Flora Park Apartments, as part of an effort to create safer streets for cyclists. While the intention is commendable, many in the community have expressed concern about how it’s playing out in practice.

Several drivers report that the lane now feels too narrow for two vehicles to pass simultaneously—especially when a bus or larger vehicle is involved. “Yesterday I had to wait for a bus to pass before I could continue driving,” one resident shared with BJL. “There was just no room for both of us.” Others are worried that the placement of the poles could actually create more danger for cyclists. “For bikers heading north, it doesn’t feel safe,” another person said. “Cars may end up clipping the safety poles—while bikers are riding right next to them.”

Still, this change could be a step in the right direction—if the city listens and adapts. With thoughtful adjustments and input from both drivers and bikers, the hope is that Greenspring can become a model for shared, safe travel.
