Baltimore, MD - May 6, 2025 - In a heartwarming play for healthcare, the Baltimore Ravens and The Stephen and Renee Bisciotti Foundation have announced a $20 million investment to bolster the nursing workforce in Baltimore-area hospitals.
This generous move, coinciding with National Nurses Day, aims to address the looming nursing shortage and support the well-being of nurses.
The funds will be distributed as four $5 million grants to MedStar Health, The University of Maryland Medical System, Johns Hopkins Health System, and Mercy Medical Center.
Authorities say these grants are intended to foster innovative strategies for recruiting, training, and retaining nurses, with the ultimate goal of mitigating a projected 20% nursing shortfall in Maryland by 2036.
"The Baltimore region is fortunate to have world-class medical institutions," said Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, via press release. "Nurses are the unsung heroes of our healthcare system, and investing in them ensures we have skilled, dependable professionals who keep it running smoothly."
Kenneth A. Samet, President & CEO of MedStar Health, expressed gratitude for the donation, stating, via press release "This generous donation illuminates the critical role of nurses and ensures a continued commitment to educate, empower and support our nurses today, tomorrow and for generations to come."
Officials say the grants will allow hospitals to explore various initiatives, such as expanding nursing education programs, providing financial assistance to aspiring nurses, and testing flexible scheduling options.
Additionally, mentorship programs and targeted recruitment campaigns are on the agenda to attract and retain nursing talent.
David N. Maine, President & CEO of Mercy Health Services, highlighted the impact of the grant, saying, via press release "This remarkably generous grant affirms the vital role of nursing in our healthcare ministry and will enable us to strengthen clinical training and prepare future nursing leaders to meet the needs of our Baltimore community."

With this substantial investment, the Ravens and the Bisciotti Foundation are not only supporting nurses but also ensuring a healthier future for the Baltimore community.
