Jerusalem, Israel - May 15, 2025 - The 3rd annual Declaration Day commemorative program, marking the historical milestone achieved on May 14, 1948, with the proclamation of Israel's Declaration of Independence, was held at the David Citadel Hotel in Jerusalem, Israel. The May 14 celebratory event was hosted by Elana Heideman, founder and CEO of the Israel Forever Foundation.
Elana grew up in Maryland, where the Heideman family has been and remains active in leading prominent international Jewish organizations. Declaration Day was initiated and developed by Elana in Israel under her Israel Forever organization. She seeks to emphasize Jewish ancestral rights and reaffirm yearly the 664 words of the Declaration. Use of the May 14 date, and not the time on the Hebrew calendar, specifically, is to reach outside the Jewish community. A student of Elie Wiesel z"l, Elana proudly advocates for Israel.
During the evening program, which was live-streamed, speakers included journalist Ruthie Blum and MK Ohal Tal. The Deputy Russian Ambassador to Israel concluded his remarks saying Israel should go to not 120, but much longer.
The guests included government officials, ambassadors, Israeli activists, and journalists. Near the end of the evening, people in the audience were asked to volunteer and come forward to speak.
The last presenter read an impressive poem, which he has allowed to be shared:
14th of May, declaration day
Jews around the world
showing up proud,
standing strong, standing loud.
One people, one call
One heart
One flag for all
And We remember the struggles that carried us here,
The prayers and sacrifices of those we hold dear.
Through persecution and darkness, we held onto light,
Dreaming of freedom through each endless night.
Then out of the darkness, dawn of freedom arrived,
Israel was reborn, and our spirit revived.
For decades since, our homeland has thrived,
Through wars and adversity, its spirit survived.
And no matter where we are, this land is in our heart,
We stand together in spirit, even when miles apart.
Today, we remember the past and all those who fought,
We celebrate the freedom that their sacrifice bought.
We stand tall together, proud, united, and free,
Am Yisrael Chai! Our nation lives for all to see.
Thank you, Matanel Samin, for your poem and for allowing BJL to share this inspiration.
Am Yisrael Chai!
