Glen Burnie, MD - May 14, 2025 – The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) continues its commitment to innovation and to enhance the customer experience with the expansion of its Maryland Mobile ID program. The MVA is now integrating Mobile ID technology with the self check-in kiosks located at all MVA branch offices, allowing customers to use their smartphones to verify identity and manage appointments.
“This integration with our self check-in kiosks reflects our commitment to leveraging technology for improved customer experience, efficiency, and security,” said MVA Administrator Chrissy Nizer. “The MVA continues to look for innovative ways to safeguard customer data while delivering on our commitment to a premier customer experience by ensuring convenience through digital identification.”
To use Mobile ID at the self check-in kiosks, Maryland residents simply need to pull up their Mobile ID in their Google, Apple or Samsung wallet, and hold it directly in front of the NFC (near field communication) reader located on the right-hand side of the kiosk. This new feature will help speed up the check-in process at MVA branches while protecting the user’s data and improving customer experience.
This is the latest expansion of the Maryland Mobile ID program. Last fall, the MVA partnered with Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) to extend the use of mobile IDs at seven participating airport restaurants. Earlier this year, the agency partnered with Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) to add the option for customers to show their mobile ID when purchasing alcohol at the Westbard retail store. The program allows customers to securely verify their age using digital credentials.
Maryland’s Mobile ID, launched in 2022, provides a secure, digital version of a driver’s license or identification card that residents can use directly from their mobile device. The digital credential enhances security, reduces the risk of identity fraud and offers a convenient way for Marylanders to verify their identity in everyday transactions.
The integration of Mobile ID is made possible by the state’s dedicated app, Mobile ID Check by MD, available for download on iOS and Google Play. This app allows businesses and government agencies to securely verify a mobile driver’s license or ID, ensuring authenticity and reducing reliance on physical cards.
